Encouraged by Faithful Ministry in Scotland

Last week I had the privilege of visiting Prison Fellowship Scotland, and it was one of those visits that leaves you encouraged, inspired, and reminded of the lasting impact faithful ministry can have over many years.

One of the main purposes of my visit was to learn more about The Sycamore Tree Project, Prison Fellowship’s restorative justice program that is currently being delivered in several prisons across Scotland. Although I wasn’t able to observe a session firsthand, I had the opportunity to spend time with volunteers who regularly facilitate the program.

Their passion was contagious.

As they shared their experiences, a common theme quickly emerged: transformation. Again and again, they spoke about people in prison who arrived carrying guilt, shame, and brokenness, only to begin discovering hope through honest conversations about responsibility, forgiveness, and restoration. They shared stories of participants opening up in ways they never expected, experiencing the love of Christ through people who simply chose to listen, care, and walk alongside them.

Hearing these testimonies was a powerful reminder that restoration often begins with relationship. The volunteers don’t simply deliver a course—they invest in people, offering dignity, compassion, and hope where it is often in short supply.

Another aspect of Prison Fellowship Scotland’s ministry that stood out to me was the remarkable level of trust they have earned throughout the country. Today, they have access to all 17 prisons in Scotland. That kind of opportunity doesn’t happen overnight. It reflects decades of faithful service, consistency, and a genuine commitment to supporting both those in prison and the wider prison community.

Their strong partnerships with prison chaplains have also been instrumental in opening doors and ensuring that ministry continues to flourish across the prison estate. These relationships are a wonderful example of what can happen when organizations work together with a shared vision of bringing hope and restoration.

I was especially grateful to spend time with John, Director of Prison Fellowship Scotland, and Graeme, their Communications Lead and Office Coordinator. They were wonderful hosts who generously shared both the successes and challenges of ministry, along with their vision for the future. It was a privilege to learn from them and to witness their passion for serving people affected by imprisonment.

As I left Scotland, I found myself thankful—not only for the conversations and hospitality—but for the reminder that faithful, long-term ministry continues to bear fruit. The lives being changed through The Sycamore Tree Project and the broader work of Prison Fellowship Scotland are evidence that hope can take root in even the most difficult places.

If you’d like to learn more about the exciting work taking place across Scotland, including recent ministry updates, opportunities for prayer, and what’s planned for the months ahead, I encourage you to read Prison Fellowship Scotland’s Summer 2026 Newsletter:

Please continue praying for John, Graeme, their volunteers, and everyone involved in the ministry across Scotland. Their faithful service is bringing hope, healing, and restoration to people who desperately need to know they have not been forgotten.
