When people hear about prison ministry, they often imagine small acts of kindness or occasional visits behind prison walls. But in Spain, something much bigger is happening.

The Sycamore Tree Project continues to grow, reaching more men and women in prison than ever before. While the numbers are encouraging, they point to something even more significant: restorative justice is proving that it belongs within the prison system.

Over the past several months, volunteers across Spain have been trained and equipped to lead Sycamore Tree Project courses, preparing them to walk alongside participants as they confront the harm caused by their actions and begin the difficult journey toward accountability and healing. At the same time, prison after prison has continued to welcome the program, allowing dozens of courses to take place and hundreds of participants to complete the experience.

This remarkable growth reflects more than successful planning, it demonstrates the trust that has been built between Prison Fellowship Spain, volunteers, and correctional institutions. The continued demand for the program shows that restorative justice is meeting a genuine need within Spain’s prisons.

But the impact doesn’t end when a course is finished.

Building on the foundation of the Sycamore Tree Project, Prison Fellowship Spain is preparing to launch its new Peacemakers Program, an initiative that will invite families into the restoration process. By helping participants repair relationships with those closest to them, the program seeks to strengthen family bonds and encourage lasting transformation beyond prison walls.

The ministry is also helping shape the future of restorative justice by engaging universities, criminology students, and social work professionals. Through lectures, awareness events, and discussions on victim empathy, accountability, and reintegration, a new generation is discovering that justice is not only about punishment, it can also be about restoration.

Like every ministry, challenges remain. Finding victims willing to share their stories and sustaining long-term volunteer involvement are ongoing needs. Yet despite these obstacles, the response from prison authorities and participants continues to be overwhelmingly positive. Feedback consistently points to lives being changed, relationships being repaired, and renewed hope for successful reintegration into society.

Spain’s experience reminds us that restorative justice is not simply a theory. It is a practical, life-changing approach that continues to gain momentum across Europe, one conversation, one volunteer, and one transformed life at a time.
